Let’s Talk: Creation Centred Design

By Michael Maracle-Polak

Welcome to Akwekon’s blog, where we explore the intersections of innovation, design, and culture. Today, I want to share with you my personal journey into the world of design and how it led to the birth of “Creation Centred Design.”

Finding My Path

About 8 years ago, I took a leap into the unknown, participating in hackathons as a creative disruptor. I quickly realized that my Mohawk heritage and unique perspective were bringing something new to the table. Our teams were not just participating; we were winning, consistently. This wasn’t just about victory; it was a sign that innovation thrives on diverse thought.

The Need for Inclusive Innovation

In these spaces, I noticed a glaring absence of Indigenous voices. This was not just about being included; it was about fundamentally changing how we approach problems. In the world of design and innovation, the late entry of Indigenous communities isn’t just a missed opportunity—it’s a call to action.

Beyond modern Design

Human-Centred Design and Universal Design have long been pillars in my approach. These philosophies prioritize accessibility and usability for all, regardless of age, size, or ability. They advocate for designing with the human experience at the forefront.

Introducing Creation Centred Design

In 2020, Akwekon introduced “Creation Centred Design,” a methodology that extends beyond human-centric needs. This approach is about designing solutions beneficial for all aspects of creation, fostering a symbiotic relationship with nature. Our current design models are failing us, focusing too narrowly on human requirements. “Creation Centred Design” is an answer to this challenge.

The Fusion of Knowledge

Perhaps the most critical aspect of my approach is the integration of colonial science with traditional Indigenous knowledge. This isn’t just about creating unity; it’s about developing solutions that benefit the entirety of creation. By blending these diverse perspectives, we can create more effective, inclusive, and sustainable designs.

Looking Forward

At Akwekon, we believe in the power of diverse voices and perspectives in shaping the future of design and innovation. My journey into “Creation Centred Design” is just one path among many. It’s a journey that emphasizes the importance of inclusivity, respect for all forms of life, and the integration of different knowledge systems.

Together, we can create a world that respects and benefits all elements of creation. Thank you for joining me on this journey.
